Together: Growing Appetites for God - a review

Lately I have received a stack of books for review and I've been working my way through them! So, perhaps I can share one a week or something! At any rate, when one has a stack of books to read and review - it is likely that I will go through and choose where to start by what interests me the most.

From the initial e-mail intro to this book - I was very intrigued. The book came just before I left to go to Carrie's and I was so excited to be able to take it with me on the trip. I started it on the way there but read most of it in one day on my way home sitting in the Chicago airport waiting for a delayed flight to bring me home.

Together: Growing Appetites for God by Carrie Ward is about one mom's journey in reading the Bible aloud to her children one chapter at a time, one day at a time. I found this book easy to read and refreshing on so many levels.

First, her children were very young when they began reading the Bible. They grew up in it. As of the writing of the book - they were on their third complete read through! In a day when we are completely overwhelmed with choices, programs, resources and books to read with our children - what a refreshing reminder that there is nothing better than straight Scripture itself.

She shares the ways that they struggled, learn, grew - but most of all you will see the benefits coming through of taking on such a beautiful journey. It took her several years to read through the Bible with her children and provided for some great conversation and I would imagine, some beautiful memories together. One Amazon reviewer mentions that Carrie is transparent and I wholeheartedly agree with that - she is very open about this journey in their home and I appreciated and enjoyed the glimpse I had into their family.

In her book, Carrie addresses difficult passages and how they walked through these with their own children. She makes practical suggestions for things they encountered and even as they expanded into Scripture memory.

The idea is still bouncing around in my head to see how God would want me to process this idea in our own home. But regardless, this book was encouraging and refreshing in a day when the Bible is being tossed aside to really give it the due diligence our families deserve and need.

I'm sorry I don't have a giveaway copy to share with you - but I do hope you will get an opportunity to read this great book!

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Moody Publishers to read and review here. All of the above opinion is my own.
