Patriotic Cake!

We returned last night from a weekend away where our littles and I were able to go to Virginia to see my friend Grace and her children! We had a fun time and as you can imagine, lots of crafting took place! I need to take pictures of most of our projects but will have fun sharing those over the next days!

First, I'm sharing this cake we made for Memorial Day - inspired by this flag cake (but not wanting to use two cake mixes!) we came up with this alternative. It was so festive and fun plus yummy too!

The fire-cracker candles were a stocking stuffer from my Mom! And, we made the red sugared star by laying a cookie cutter on the cake and sprinkling the red sugar inside it and lifting the cookie cutter off.

Obviously, I had fun taking photos of it!

This is SO fun, Monica! Love this. I tried my hand at one of those 'flag' cakes with the strawberries as stripes and blueberries as stars. Very simple....and yummy, too. But yours looks oh-so-much-yummier! You are so crafty!

Beautiful. And I love the cake dish cover, too.

Oh how pretty! I am loathe to admit I did nothing patriotic for Memorial Day aside from going to a Memorial Day speech. I do believe this summer is going to be the summer of "special" desserts & meals. I am trying to make a summer of memories for our boys especially our eldest as he heads off to USMC bootcamp this fall.

That is darling! Have you seen the lastest addition of Taste of Home? They show how to make some adorable star cake toppers out of jolly ranchers! So doing that!!

Looking forward to seeing all of your crafty things.

I love how you adapted the recipe to suit your needs. The sugar star is so festive, but simple to do for a novice cake decorator. I am amazed that you remembered to bring those candles on your trip. Your mom knows you well to include those in your stocking. I think stocking gifts are the most fun!
