A Handcrafted Christmas: Skirt for Mama!

Here's the first project I completed for this Christmas ~ a skirt for me! I used the Amy Butler Barcelona Skirt pattern - I love these skirts and after wearing them all summer, I have been very pleased with how they have washed up and wear. I never need to iron them and they have just been wonderful for wearing around the house or dressing up for church or weddings.

The fabric I used can be found here. I don't usually make or even purchase something new for myself for Christmas clothing - but thought it would be fun this year since it will coordinate with the skirts I'm planning for the little ladies.

Now, I'll be on the hunt through my closet and clearances and sales for what to wear with this. I can't decide if I want to wear red, black or maybe silver with it. Suggestions? Do you traditionally get something new to wear at Christmas?

I think black or silver would compliment your skirt the best. (its beautiful by the way!) Red might be a tad too much.
I try to make the children a new outfit for christmas, but being the Mama, I usually don't get anything new.
This year though, we have my Grandma's 80th birthday/Grandparents 60th anniversary party, and I am hoping to make myself something pretty and new, that will be used for Thanksgiving and Christmas too.

Black would really make that red pop! I agree with not going with red, simply because they are soooo hard to match.
I usually do not buy anything new for Christmas, but after losing almost 80 pounds, I can't wait to look for something special to wear this year!! I also, need to get out my machine, and begin practicing my sewing, so that I can embrace my closet with my very own modest pazzazz!

Your blog is bringing me much inspiration, and I want to thank you for writing what the Lord leads you to.

I would try white with it maybe, and then accesorize for colour...
Great skirt! you deserve it :)
We usually get something new to wear for christmas, hubby will get a new tie, I may get a new top or some earrings/necklace. We usually get my son a new shirt as he outgrows everything from year to year. It's my daughter who usually gets a homemade new dress...Alas this year she won't wear a dress...

Have a great day!

A black cardigan with a red shell. Bring it Saturday and let's pop in some downtown boutiques.

I would LOVE for me and Jane to have matching and/or coordinating outfits for Christmas!!! I think it would be fun to dress alike all the time, but that's just me, I'm corny!!!

I think black would be really pretty; red would be great but way too hard to match. I love that fabric!

I usually just try to have a red shirt or something for Christmas but I may need to make or buy myself something pretty this year. Our family is planning to do a family picture at Christmas time so it would be good to have something nice to wear.

Have you thought incorporating about a nice grey (silver would be too much), maybe with black stockings? - Maybe a grey wool sweater and don't be afraid to do (winter)white mock turtleneck under that if you do the sweater.

Just ideas. Great design on the skirt fabric. So rich!!

I usually buy a Christmas sweater on sale after the holiday. I bought an adorable one from Christopher and Banks for 10.00 last year! I can't wait to wear it this year!
I think Black would be perfect! That fabric is adorable. Maybe you could make Samuel a little vest with the same fabric!

I'd like to see what the skirt looks like. It is so hard to find skirts at the store, so I'd like to make some. Just curious what this pattern looks like.

Beautiful fabric! Looks very lovely!

Monica, I love that fabric and you did a great job matching up the pattern. I can't tell if that is white or cream with the red. If it is white, I think a white shell and cardigan would be nice. Black would really make the skirt pop and would look lovely with some pearls.
When my sister and I were younger my mom made all our clothes and she would make us a new outfit every year as well as new pajams. I tried to do the same with my children as well when I became a mom.

Very cute! I'd wear a black top with with fun red, silver and cream jewelry...maybe something a little chunkier.

I think black sounds like a nice combination with the skirt. I love love love that fabric! So pretty and elegant. Maybe you could make a flower pin with some of the extra scraps of fabric to add a little color around your face.

That is gorgeous!! Love the fabric!!
I don't typically get new clothes for Christmas, or maybe I do. We don't really dress up for it at any rate.

I have a dress that's about that shade of red and cream floral, and I accessorize it with a black sweater and shoes, and silver jewelry.

I do think a red top would look great with that skirt if you could find the right shade, but that may not be worth the work :-)

I think it is beautiful! And I think whatever you choose is going to look wonderful!

Thanks for sharing. You've put me in the spirit to get my holiday's started!

I guess I'm outnumbered. Ü I have a dark red ribbed turtleneck and I think that something like this would look great with this skirt (but then I like red Ü). I don't usually buy new clothes for Christmas, but two years ago I did as we had family pictures.

I really like the skirts you've made with this pattern, I just can't bring myself to buy a pattern when I have such limited sewing time. *sigh* I'm terrible at putting together outfits, but I do try to keep my eyes peeled for a seasonal top here and there at thrift stores. I really dislike shopping for myself, but I guess it's necessary once in a while.

Love the fabric. I would go with black probably - and maybe silver jewelery. I would love to buy something new each Christmas but I don't. My daughter gets something since she is still growing but I try to wear the same thing for a few years.

Such an elegant skirt. I can't tell the exact color of the skirt, but it appears to be ruby. I just bought 23 pairs(!) of shoes at Walmart for $1/pair. Only one pair was for me, but I'm having fun blessing others with such a great find. If you happen to wear a size 6 shoe, I have an adorable pair of ruby ballet flats. They are from the George line. If that is your size, I would be glad to send them to you. Even if they don't match this skirt, you could use them for some holiday outing.

Depending on how many places you need to go for Christmas (that would require a little dress up!) I get a couple of different shirts! I always try to pick one new item for a Christmas outfit and then I wear it differently for all the parties.

Darling skirt. Love how you hung the jingle bell on the line, too! I would wear black with it. I'm trying to remember if your boots are brown or black--that would make the ensemble even cuter!

Looks very cute!

white shirt. It compliments the white in the skirt and brings the whole look together. The black shirt is distracting. Even if you wore it with black shoes, the outfit wouldn't have the softness you are looking for.

white!
