Candy Cane Cookies

No, I haven't finished all of my baking - but these are pictures I had on file from last year. I thought I'd share my four favorite cookie recipes for Christmas with you. I know everyone has traditional cookies they love, but just thought it might be fun! Here's the first one:

Candy Cane Cookies:

1/2 c. butter or margarine
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3/4 tsp. peppermint extract
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Cream together butter, shortening, sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Add extracts. Gradually stir in flour. Divide dough in half. Add food coloring to one half and mix well. Wrap each half in waxed paper or plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour (or you can freeze the dough at this point). Preheat oven to 375. Roll cookies to long ropes twisting together one of each color to form the candy cane shape. Bake 9-10 minutes.

If desired, brush with egg white and sprinkle with crushed candy cane.

Thanks, Jenn, for a great giveaway!!

those turned out great. My aunt used to make some but hers were always red & green.

These look like something the kids would enjoy us making.

perfect timing on this recipe. As I was just preparing my list of what I want to bake this year. I love to make Cranberry bread, it ia tradition with my side of the family. We also frost sugar cookies christmas eve. This Candy Cane Cookie recipe looks delight ful and a must add to our baking list.

My mom made these every year. Maybe I'll try it with my kids this year. Thanks for posting the recipe.

Mmmm! Cookies! We'll be right over (only kidding- it would be a long trip from Syracuse, NY!).

Cookies is one area we discussed upping this year. We haven't made that many in the past 8 or 9 years and I really miss making a gazillion different kinds to make really good homemade goodie gifts. I have about 4 more nights worth of home sewing to finish my sewing gifts- then we will move onto cookie production.

These are a favorite of mine too! They are just so festive and super yummy too. I am not big on Christmas cookies, but these are one of those special favorites. They remind me of the old Betty Crocker cookie cookbook.

Thank you for sharing this recipe....I have tried before to make those candy cane cookies but they always broke...this recipe is different, so maybe now I will have success.

Those are my very favorite Christmas cookie - my mom makes them every year and I can never get mine to look as nice as hers!
One thing she does different is add almond flavoring instead of peppermint. MMMM.....

I am glad to see you post this recipe after you made it. All candy cane cookie recipes I have found online create terrible doughs that are impossible to work with. I am glad to find one that actually works well!

Thank you.
